i completely reordered my brownie cupboards today. obsessively so, so much i have made labels as to what is on each shelf, and told other guiders to put it back in the right place or ask if they dont know where it goes!

Anyway, i have found about 5 bags of lolly sticks (like the ones you get ice lollys on). there must be 500-1000 of the things, so i was wondering if anyone had craft ideas for them??

you can make those mexican ojo things (I can't remember the exact name but I think they translate into eye of the god or something like that) where you wrap the wool around the sticks and make pretty patterns then hang them up

I'll see if I can find a link so you know what I'm talking about!

Baggie

can't remember ever using them for anything else though, someone else may have to help you think of uses for the other 450!

if you break them in half and then dip them in paint the girls can paint with em

Smartie

You can tell i worked in nursery we used them all the time!!

Can make photo frames with them... or boxes if you have loads

If you do quiz can write answers on them and girls have one/few each and have to work out when theirs is the right answer.

Have used in past with foam shapes butterflies to make treasure hunt.

Could use them as part of artist badge to do the patterned work.

If they not coloured but wood, you could make sweets/chocoaltes with them and use them as lolli sticks!!

Could make puppets with them? sticking faces on end.

Make good knives if using clay

Could glue together to make mini sailing boats?

Use instead of rulers when you have to draw lines

Make skies for barbie... ok getting silly now!

Smartie
16th January 2008, 01:01 AM
i might skip the barbie skis.....but aside from that thanks DC!! and laura!
think i might have a lolly stick night, set up tables with diff activities on, and let them all make lots of different things

laurad82
16th January 2008, 01:03 AM
yeh sometimes thats good just giving them a variety of stuff and let them make what they want

u could have a mini comp in either groups or individuals to see who can com up with the best monument using them (big ben, leaning tower of pizza, etc)

Smartie
16th January 2008, 01:12 AM

on pack holiday for them to write their name on one end then colour in, they then put their lolly stick in a cup designating their drink choice (eg orange sqash, blackcurrent squash or water) so you make the right number of drinks and know who asked for what, we've done it for years.

woodyowl
16th January 2008, 08:31 AM
we do the same thing anna and the kids love it

I know Christmas is over but it is only 344 days til the next time!
We have made 'Rudolphs' by glueing 3 lolly sticks in an inverted triangle. Top lolly stick is not glued exactly at the end of the other two, this is where you stick his ears. Glue a red nose (we used funky foam) on the tip of the triangle.
There are loads of ideas at: http://www.makingfriends.com/craftsticks.htm

Can also use lolly sticks with names on when choosing someone for a game or a special job.

We're making frames using lollisticks (I found them in the cupboard too! lol) and some foam shapes, although on a guider training day thing sept '06 I used beads as that was all they had (they just gave you loads of craft stuff and we did what we wanted with it) I made a mock up of the photo frame this year, and have started taking pictures of the brownies (make sure you have consent) so they'll hopefully be done in time for Mothers day!

lol
we decorate or drinks sticks before hand with the theme and then they take home at the end of the week

Smartie
16th January 2008, 12:58 PM
do you decorate them or is it something the girls do? oh and do you make placemats or whatever? thats something we never done either

woodyowl
16th January 2008, 01:03 PM
GIC decorates as out girls never know the theme of the pack holiday
she decortes by writting their pack hol name in glitter pens up the stick
then adding say a foam elephant or what ever fits in with theme
last years was petter pan she laminated some tink stickers and these were at the top of each (think ive got photos i can show you )

also place mats yes thats our first nights activity
we have the graces already printed on the back so that everyone can see them when we sing
again we laminate these
got more photos if you remind me

sorry ladies, can you explain the PH drinks thing.....

Do you have different coloured cups for different drinks or do you put them out in groups? I could see this going wrong with our Brownies!!

anna
16th January 2008, 03:18 PM
we label an empty beaker, one for each option. put the lolly sticks on the side (in sixes) then each girl takes her stick and puts in in her choice drink. It means you know who ordered what.

Wren
16th January 2008, 03:25 PM
I think this is a brill idea and one which I can incorporate into every day meetings - choosing games, drinks, anything!!

woodyowl
16th January 2008, 03:31 PM
sure can
maybe an activty to get your new rainbow brownie etc to do when she joins your pack

gettin her to decorate her stick with either the help of another girl (brownie buddy) or leader etc
nice ice breaker for them plus when put in the pot with the others will give them a sense of belonging

No brownie buddies in rainbows tho :( lol

but a good idea none-the-less!!

Unit activity first, then individual as they join. Trying to fit it in is gonna be difficult tho. Mmmmm gotta put my thinking cap on again....

You could make trinket boxes with them:
place 2 make a base by glueing sticks to 2 cross bars, then build them up log cabin style - doing opposite sides of the square at the same time. Hope that makes sense.

do you need consent to take a picture and give it back to them? I have definitely NOT got consent from several parents to use pictures in guiding publicity etc but I didn't think this extended to pictures that you are just taking and giving them directly...

I know why it's there but that tick-box means I can't hand photos in to county at the moment as I can't get any that don't have kids without permission in.

MUST do my tax. Get myself off this forum now!

Mothers day Jewellery trees? a but fiddly but they work well and are practical enough that they don't get binned in a month!

FluffyOwl

sorry.. toddled off to try and get fit (!)

lay one lolly stick vertically & glue (or tie with string for ethnic chic) two or three horizontally across it.

Decorate with pens, stickers, sticky gems and what have you or if you are feeling really brave you could use papier mache.

once dried stick one end in a big blob of modelling clay or oasis (you'll probably need to weight oasis down)

Hang all your jewellery from the arms!

TA DA!

we could start an international lolly stick exchange! get the girls to decorate one each with their first name and pack and everytime they go to an event or meet a new guiding friend they can swap them with the other girls! although technically that would just sustain the supply...

hmmm.... what would Greenback do with an excess of lolly sticks....

One thing we do which is great this time of year is make recipe card holders and put in cards with healthy recipes in them, (the parents like this one too)
I'll try and find a link so you can see how they go togther!
