    New Programme - Discuss!

We're not starting the new programme 'officially' until next term, but have several of the older girls keen to do their Brownies Go For It - so along with the general suggestions, a copy of the new Guide Handbook and Badgebook, I gave them a folder of the UMAs last night as I guessed that they...

    Weekly Discussion: Home comforts

My fold up chair - got to the stage where sitting on the ground isn't comfortable (and getting back up again is decidedly undignified...)

    New Programme - Discuss!

Absolutely, that's certainly happened to me on several occasions - but the difference is that if we tried an activity before and could see part way through that things weren't going well, we could adapt it, or cut it short and do something else. Now, as activities are compulsory to enable the...

Ours love making up games as well - so we've adapted this to create an evening's worth of activities. Basically, I pull together a box of 'stuff' (eg bean bags, ball of string, paper cups, pipecleaners, dice, soft balls, compass, etc, etc) and each Six sends up one person in turn to pick out an...

I think this illustrates the issue - what's going to really appeal to one group of girls, may well be seen by others as 'boring' - which means that a) we need many more activities to choose from and b) we need the flexibility as leaders to be able to do activities with the girls, that tie in...

    New Programme - Discuss!

I'm not a Rainbow leader, so haven't seen the details of this activity - but if you need some free inflatable beach balls, I've just smiled sweetly at our local Virgin Money store who are handing these out at the moment (and suspect that since its nearing the end of summer, they won't be doing...

Weekly Discussion: For whom the bell shaped badge tolls...

True - but only really thinking of doing the Camp SB this way - and certainly not two SBs from the same Theme. Our meeting place doesn't really lend itself to the Camp SB (not enough room to put up tents, or to light fires safely) so realistically Brownie Holiday is going to be the best place...

Weekly Discussion: No awakeovers on our watch

I share your pain: it's never happened before, but we've had a couple of sleepovers during the past year or so where the Brownies got up at crazy o'clock (well after they'd apparently gone to sleep) and started playing games, including (on one occasion) 'tag'. Tried some of the suggestions...

Weekly Discussion: For whom the bell shaped badge tolls...

I'm thinking of offering the Brownies the opportunity to do the Camp SB at next year's Brownie Holiday, if they want to choose a theme such as I'm a Survivor, Bare Necessities, Swallows & Amazons, etc - where I can work the SB activities into the Holiday programme, but still leave time for other...

Weekly Discussion: For whom the bell shaped badge tolls...

We've used them quite a lot, both for residentials (leading to some very memorable Brownie Holidays & sleepovers) and to complement the official programme (many tied in very well with the You, Community, World themes). Have never felt constrained to stick to the exact guidelines/activities in...

Are we no longer doing the Brownie Story?

I don't know the 'official line' on the Brownie story - but we've got a number of games that we've adapted (ladders, fishes in the sea, etc) where the girls are split into groups (Tommy, Betty, mum/wiseowl) and we read a shortened version of the story, with the girls running when 'their' name is...

    New Programme - Discuss!

Ah - hadn't spotted that one... Think I'll keep an eye on the bins at work and fish out the neverending cups from Costa, etc, and rinse these out. At least then we can reuse these before they finally go to the tip (though having just looked at the activity, think I'll see if it works with the...

    New Programme - Discuss!

I take it though that there's no objection to our 'bending it to suit our own (and the Brownies) preferences' by swapping the use of bundles of bamboo sticks (from my garden) for plastic straws in insect homes, or bowls of soap and water for wet wipes which figure in quite a few activities, etc...

    New Programme - Discuss!

Whilst I really like most of the new programme, especially the progression from one section to another and many of the new interest badges, I am concerned that the Unit Meeting Activities element of completing the Theme awards is so prescriptive - it feels like the 'powers that be' don't trust...
