Welcome to the mad house and good luck with the little yellow ones..

    Welcoming Volunteers

I think the general advice is keep it simple, no need to go in to a lot of detail until you have scoped out what she is interested in and why she has volunteered. Then you can tailor the options accordingly. Don't go promising lots of training and adventures unless you can fulfil that, but do...

Weekly Discussion: A marker of taste?

I think in recent years there have been to many badges produced, both nationally, locally and commercially, to the extent the ones that girls do work for and gain are lost in a fog of 'I've been to this event or that event' or 'I was in Guiding when this, that and the other happened'. I can...

When it comes down to it, it all comes down to budgeting. They have less to spend on the 'fun' things. You can't please all the people all of the time

    Adding Skill Builders to GO

No, because a girl may be missing that evening or your plans may change..

    I'm a ... guider part 60

I'm a Guider send lots of hugs to Floss, a dreadful situation to be in but hopefully you have plenty of support around you, medical, family and guiding family. Hope all goes well.

Don't do as I do, do as I say?

I agree with Fenris, the new programme is so new, no one can say hand on heart, it won't work, the girls hate it. All we can say at the moment is that our experience suggests this isn't the best way or the way I would like it done. What we have to remember is that the process of developing the...

    Compare and contrast...

There is no longer any reason you can't advertise all you need to say but just be sensible what you do advertise and make use of Join Us

Nicknames for Guiders a safeguarding issue?

I don't think it's a safeguarding issue as such but it is something to be conscious of in the future if any girls have issues in their background... Eg split families, maybe mum is not around or has died. Whilst it may be fine for now it's easy to forget how it may appear in a year or two when...

    Compare and contrast...

The advice not to day and time was rescinded some time ago. Yes, we need to be sensible about how we promote ourselves but no reason to make it completely anonymous. Likewise I believe the choices on 'Join us' give a details of days and time ( if the units have entered these on GO)

What does your Guiding bag look like?

I believe The Works have some quite substantial plastic display folders which are good for storing the SB and UMA cards in... We could have an entire thread on how different leaders are organising the storage of these resources

Weekly Discussion: Is there a future for cloth badges

No, but I've seen plenty where the enamel has fallen out

    REN Forms

The idea of getting people to get a REN authorised before booking is to make sure the event is viable before any major commitment is made. There have been too many instances of events cancelled due to lack of numbers, no real thought put in place before expensive venues have been booked and...

    New Programme - Discuss!

Forgive my ingnorance, but are there any occasions during the year that you may get together, at a camp or event, when it would be possible ? Even in an adapted form ?
  15. Q

Don't do as I do, do as I say?

I think we forget that we are only 6 weeks or so into the new programme and even the first to get started with it have only a few hours insight. Even trainers are just getting to grips with the ins and outs of it and are relying on their previous Guiding knowledge to answer queries that haven't...

Weekly Discussion: Does Go deserve a bad reputation?

I use Go as a unit leader but also in a County role. I think the main problem is that GO covers so many roles it is hard for someone who uses it for one or two funtions to see it's worth overall. It may be clunky for some aspects but when you list out all that it is designed to do, it is pretty...
  17. Q

Don't do as I do, do as I say?

No, the intention is for each girl to have her own book, where that isn't possible then maybe the girl can borrow a unit copy.
  18. Q

Don't do as I do, do as I say?

Re copying - per Girlguiding website : Unit meeting activity cards and skills builder cards can be photocopied to give to volunteers or girls in your unit a copy to help run an activity. However pages from section handbooks, badge books and record book should not be photocopied, as we want...
  19. Q

Don't do as I do, do as I say?

You can photocopy (or scan ) the cards for use within the unit ( it's covered in one of the online trainings) ..just not for sharing further afield. It is a perennial problem that if the UMA's were available for download we would be having the argument about the costs of printing and ink. You...

Don't do as I do, do as I say?

So on the basis that the profits from trading are fed back into Girlguiding where is the benefit of this ? Rewind to the old programme, leaders having to source the activities, find instructions and produce their own resources...who paid for all that ?
