Trading sell te Brownie, Guide and SS blankets (there is an outdoor shop in Stafford that has Scout and Guide stuff, so they might be able to help you).

Or a fleece throw from a supermarket or somewhere? Or Abakhans in Hanley have got some nice blankets too

A question for you all. I have a large woollen blanket that I'm sewing my badges onto, but its itchy, stained and a nightmare to keep clean. So I'm looking at getting a fleece blanket possibly a GG official blanket. But how big are they? I'm looking at turning it into a poncho, any ideas on where to start?

Can I second the neckerchief request, please? I'm redoing my blanket and currently have my Sherwood '98, Gang Show, 2 Guide, a Scottish trade and a Centenary necker to sew on and I just can't see a sensible way of doing it. My only two thoughts were to have them rolled and edging the blanket (with triangles pointing in) or lining them up down the back of the blanket. It's driving me mad!

I got an amazing navy and reddy orange blanket from IKEA this weekend, I am going to resew all my badges onto my new blanket! Can't wait to get started, need to dig out my old and tatty one now though, and really organise them well.

I do not think I could face attempting to resew all my badges on - hard enough to do it once.

I have now learnt to sow properly.... and my previous attempt was so poor, That I was having to resew ones back on, afterwards anyway! So new blanket here I come.

Everyone seems to have made theres into ponchos? why?
Did mine as a poncho as I knew that it meant you can wear it without having to hold onto it whilst joining in with action songs! Plus it was how my Mum had done hers :) Started mine as a Guide and have carried on to fill it up as a leader!

I am doing one as a poncho, but my oldest one is a traditional square blanket and my newest one is just keeping everybody entertained.

When I had one just as a blanket, I had to put it down on the ground for action songs. I ended up sewing a zip onto it so I could zip up two edges to wear it. Now as a poncho I can keep it on. I only take it off when I am leading things and near the fire as I really don't fancy the idea of camp blanket wafting into the fire!

Mine's a poncho too, it has been very practical to actually wear and is still flat for on my bed/top of sleeping bag :)
Nearly ready to post a pic !

I think the simple answer is that for most people, a poncho is the easiest way to get a camp blanket that stays on during the action songs!

My blanket is done cloak-style but getting hold of the cloak clasps is the tricky part for most people - I have only ever seen them sold by people who specialise in selling to re-enactors and who are difficult to find outside those circles.

You can wear your camp blanket any way you like, there's nothing to stop you being completely different if you wish! Just because most people go for ponchos doesn't mean you have to! ;)

I started my camp blanket a couple of months ago and have about 30 badges on it, but now want to make it into a poncho that can still be used as a blanket! What's the best way to make the hole bit for my head to go through without it being a massive hole (because I still want it to be a blanket too!)? Also, how does everyone feel about having their poncho diagonal or horizontal? If you know what I mean :s

You will get so many different versions now! :)

For the neck you can do a straight slit or a "T" Shape - start small tho' and check for head size - loads of people cut too large and then have a nightmare trying to stitch the blanket back together.

Equally - diagonal or horizontal - there are ponchos out there every which way - so go with whatever takes your fancy.
