Er, I think you need to check that Fox. As actually the answer is yes. You can claim Gift Aid on membership fees - which means local subs and the national membership fee (or "census"). In fact WoodyOwl has quoted "The money can only be claimed on total subs, which includes the census charge if paid separately."

Gift Aid can be claimed on "census" whether it is collected as part of the general subs, or separately. This has been made quite clear by CHQ on a number of occasions.

The backdated claim is also 4 years from end of March. HM Revenue have changed their rules and repayments can only go back 4 years from the current tax year. You can state whatever date you wish on the claim eg " any donation made since 2005 " but effectively you only have days to make any claims for 04/05 or 05/06.

You are right, I thought there was a "not" missing but it is exactly as in the GGUK Gift Aid pack. Census can be paid for separately and still claimed.

I guess therefore that if we paid for outings etc. out of unit funds we could also claim Gift Aid on subs if we charged higher subs to make up for those?

You can claim gift aid on your unit subs, whatever amount the subs for your unit happen to be. And you have the choice of whether to charge all outings separately to subs, some (e.g. those not during the usual unit meeting time), or whether your subs are set at a level to cover most/all outings. On the downside, if you charged a higher sub in order to cover all outings, might that disadvantage those girls who cannot attend outings outwith the usual meeting time slot, or those who find paying the current fee a struggle?

Unfortunately you have to have the forms as proof of declaration so unless you can borrow back from those that have moved on you can't claim. It might be worth checking how long you need to keep forms for anyway as I am not sure if you can destroy them so soon after leaving. I found it useful to download some forms from the HMRC website or make your own spreadsheet of who has paid what so you can simply copy the final figure onto the claim sheet. Remember you are claiming from the parent so if you have older sisters that you can prove you had subs from you can go further back. I think the first claim is the most difficult as you are back dating but once you get the hang of it is not too bad and the return is well worth it.
Hope this helps, give me a shout if you need anymore help x

This is really useful. Our Brownies don't do gift aid atm I've discovered - there are 30 of them!

I'm going to set it up for Guides as soon as the group starts - set up all the paperwork and stuff and so I'm going to offer to try and do a big back dated claim for Brownies.
I have Tolley Centenary camp, Guides 100, Camp Mud, Camping is fun, and I love Guides badges available. 75p each. Please pm for details
