Is it just me our does anyone else find themselves putting their hand up when they want people to be quiet other places than at Rainbows/Brownies/Guides? I did it in work the other day. Strangely enough it worked but I think everyone only stopped talking because they were wondering why I'd gone mad.
I'm through accepting limits 'cause someone says they're so. Some things I cannot change but 'till I try I'll never know.
I think I'll try defying gravity ... and you can't pull me down

I found myself doing it in a pub when on a night out with my friends and no one would help decide where we were going next (and yes I did shout two ears as per my above post! I think thats what shut them up!)

It's sooooooo hard not to stick my hand up in the air at church youth group when I want them to calm down a bit! It doesn't help that we meet in the same hall and a scary number of the girls were all my Brownies a few years ago.
Since when has Guiding only taken 1 ½ hours a week??!

It can be amazingly effective with adults. At a Guiders' event the chair walked into the training room with the (outside) trainer, more or less un-noticed. She put her hand up and within 3 seconds there was silence. The trainer was amazed at someone having such power, and longed to use the same system with the choir he ran!

One of my friends helped out at a brownie event that I was organising and thought the quiet sign was great.
The only thing is when we were at my QG presentation (my mum could not go so her and my sister went with me) I had to stop her putting her hand up! She wanted to see if it would work with the adults, I assured her that it would but then she would have about 100 people looking at her expecting her to say something important!

lmao, that would have been quite funny.
    what's this two ears thing?
We also say "A hush went through the crowd" and the girls should reply with "A hush" and after that there should be silence.

Personally I think all of our signals are to do with B-P being a mason - why else shake hands with your left hand and salute? I'm sure they all have their origin there, we could even raise trouser legs only girls used to wear skirts.................

My school use this method, and I find it works well

Teacher: Ding Dong, are you listening?
Kids: Ding dong, we are listening.

OT slightly, how much do you guys enforce it must be your right hand that is raised? I had an argument...I mean debate...wit my GIC about this!!

I've designed a new Centenary badge - http://www.guiders.co.uk/showthread....76-A-new-badge. Post if you'd like one!

I always use my right hand and it always works really well with our lot and I have noticed, the older girls always take a minute to explain what it means to the new ones on their first night.
