I know this is quite a common game, but never played it before and just need some instructions please? In between calling out the name of a corner, what do the girls do??

thanks

we just play it with themed names for the 4 corners on the room and a themed name for the middle eg. apple, pear, orange, banana and fruit salad for the middle

then you call out "apples" and girls run to apple corner - last one there is out
then call out other corners
if recall same one twice and girls "move" - ALL the girls are out

We also adapt it to fit themes. Also we do it with questions, instead of just shouting something and the girls running, and any that get the wrong answer are out.

1. Label the 4 corners to fit your theme. ie. red, yellow, blue, green.
2. All girls in middle, call out question ie. what colour are bananas
3. girls run to the corner they think is correct.
4. Those that were wrong are out. Rest return to the middle, and repeat 2-4 till only one girl is left.

We make it easy, they don't even have to think of an answer!
We'd do it like kathrynha's example - but for 2) they just run to one of four corners randomly; then the independent caller (who can't see who is where .....) shouts out one of the corners, and those there are "out" ........ keep going until only one left (once we get down to 4 girls left, we tell them they have to pick one corner each ..)

we play a version called bus stops...the girls are obssessed!!
basically the leaders or chosen girls form bus stops one in each corner...someone shouts 'GO' and they run around then when 'stop' is shouted each 'bus stop' holds up a number of fingers, the girls then run to the bus stops but the max number of girls which the bus stop can hold is the number of fingers...if they don't fit into any bus stop then they're out

ooh like this idea :)

can't believe how many variations on "corners" there are

we actually play a variation for parties - based on 6 chairs (rather than corners) and each chair is allocated a themed picture and a number from 1-6 - then girls dance to music and select a "chair" - THROW DICE - all those on that numbered chair get a sweetie [rainbows and brownie age groupes] or are out (depending on the rules of the game)

I like the sound of that!

We used to play a version of this called called shops. Each corner was named a different shop and then an item was shouted and we ran to whichever shop we thought could get it from!!

Oh i like this. Might have to try it out. Sometimes the simplest of games are the best

We can't easily use all four corners of our hall for running but we play Red, Yellow, Green with two sides and the middle - will have to try these variations - I like "shops" and we should do the sums one (they love Ladders which I do with sums, but sometimes we don't have enough girls to play that).

We have a badminton court painted on our hall, we name each of the boxes, last one to the box is out, also make it more complicated by giving the smaller boxes names too, so any Brownie that doesn't fit is also out. Means that our fastest Brownies are not always the winners!

We play the method that they pick what corner then someone who is not looking shouts a corner and all those who are there are out. I hate the game though and think its rubbish but the kids like it. I thought it should have been that they run in a circle and when we shout stop they go to the nearest but they just run to whatever corner.

It is handy for a theme night where you can taylor the game.
